How long it takes and how many nights on board
According to the timetable, Kyiv — Budva takes 38 h 30 min, which means two nights on the bus:
- night one — across Ukraine: Zhytomyr, Rivne, Lviv in the morning;
- day two — Stryi, Zakarpattia, the Romanian border, Timișoara, then Serbia;
- night two — via Belgrade towards Montenegro;
- day three — Podgorica in the morning, then the coast and Budva before lunch.
There are three borders on the route: Ukraine — Romania, Romania — Serbia, Serbia — Montenegro. Nobody can say in advance how long they will take, so don't book a transfer, tour or check-in right at 11:30 — leave yourself some slack.
On board
The bus has a toilet, air conditioning, 220 V sockets, USB ports and Starlink internet. You can charge your phone and laptop on the way and spend the time on films, books or work.
Luggage
The fare includes 1 piece of luggage up to 25 kg and hand luggage up to 5 kg. If you need more, extra luggage costs 1,200 UAH per piece up to 25 kg.
Your suitcase travels in the hold, so keep everything you need on the road in your hand luggage: passport, money, medicines, chargers, things for the night and toiletries. Luggage may be checked at the borders, so pack so that your case is easy to open and close.
What to pack for two nights on the road
- a neck pillow, a blanket or a warm layer — the bus is air-conditioned and nights can feel cool;
- a sleep mask and earplugs;
- comfortable clothes and a change of shoes or socks;
- water and snacks — without meat or dairy, which cannot be brought into the EU;
- a power bank and cables, even though the bus has sockets and USB;
- wet wipes, hand sanitiser, a toothbrush;
- any medicines you take, in their original packaging;
- headphones — to watch films over Starlink without disturbing others;
- some cash in euros, Montenegro's currency.
Travelling with children
Two nights on the road are a challenge for a child, so prepare: a favourite toy, a tablet with downloaded cartoons and headphones, comfortable clothes for sleeping, wet wipes and plenty of water. Don't forget the child's travel documents; check the requirements in advance on the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine website.
Documents
You need a biometric passport for international travel. Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport can enter Montenegro, Serbia and Romania visa-free; check the current rules on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before you travel. Keep your passport in your hand luggage: it is checked for every passenger at every border.
Where to get off in Budva
There are two stops in Budva: Budva Slavija (11:20) and the final stop, Budva Slovenska Plaža (11:30). Choose the one closer to your accommodation and select it when booking.
If you are staying near Budva rather than in town, you can get off earlier: in Bečići (11:12), Rafailovići (11:05), Sveti Stefan (10:45) or Petrovac (10:25). These are resorts of the Budva Riviera. The fare from Kyiv is the same to any of these stops — from 5,900 UAH — so pick the one nearest to where you are staying.
If you are heading somewhere other than the Budva Riviera, it may be easier to get off earlier. Podgorica (08:30) is the capital, a good starting point for travelling inland — see the Kyiv — Podgorica page. Bar (09:30) is a port town in the south of the coast.
Budva is known for its old town and Adriatic beaches. A late-morning arrival is handy: you have time to check in and stroll along the seafront by evening.
