How to Get from Ukraine to Montenegro by Bus

How to Get from Ukraine to Montenegro by Bus

The easiest way to get from Ukraine to Montenegro by bus is the direct Kyiv — Budva service. One bus takes you all the way from Kyiv to the Adriatic coast with no transfers. No dragging suitcases between platforms and no worrying about missing a connection. You board in your own city and get off in Podgorica, Bar, Budva or one of the resorts of the Budva Riviera.

The route runs through Zhytomyr, Rivne, Lviv, Stryi, Mukachevo and Berehove, then through Romania (Timișoara) and Serbia (Belgrade) to Montenegro. There are regular weekly departures in both directions; available dates are shown in the date picker on each route page.

Where the bus to Montenegro departs from

You can board the Ukraine — Montenegro bus in seven cities. Here are the stops, departure times and one-way fares:

  • Kyiv — Dachna bus station, 22:00, from 5,900 UAH;
  • Zhytomyr — UPG filling station, 23:35, from 5,900 UAH;
  • Rivne — UPG filling station, 02:10 (overnight), from 5,900 UAH;
  • Lviv — WOG filling station, 05:50, from 5,500 UAH;
  • Stryi — OKKO filling station, 06:35, from 5,500 UAH;
  • Mukachevo — UPG filling station, 08:45, from 5,500 UAH;
  • Berehove — ATB stop, 09:40, from 5,500 UAH.

If you live in or near Kyiv, the Dachna bus station is the natural choice: it is the first stop, so you can load your luggage and settle in without a rush. From western Ukraine it makes sense to board in Lviv or Zakarpattia — the trip is shorter and the fare is lower. There is no stop in Uzhhorod itself; the nearest boarding point is Mukachevo (about 40 km away), at the UPG filling station.

See the timetable and seats for boarding in the capital on the Kyiv — Budva page, and for boarding in the west on the Lviv — Budva page.

Where the bus arrives in Montenegro

On day three of the trip the bus passes through Podgorica and along the coast, stopping in several places. Get off wherever you are staying:

  • Podgorica — bus station, 08:30. The capital of Montenegro and a good base for travelling inland.
  • Bar — 09:30. A port town in the south of the coast.
  • Petrovac — bus station, 10:25;
  • Sveti Stefan — 10:45;
  • Rafailovići — 11:05;
  • Bečići — 11:12;
  • Budva — Slavija stop (11:20) and the final stop, Slovenska Plaža (11:30).

Petrovac, Sveti Stefan, Rafailovići and Bečići are resorts of the Budva Riviera. Budva itself is known for its old town and Adriatic beaches. The fare is the same to any of these stops: from 5,900 UAH from Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Rivne, and from 5,500 UAH from Lviv, Stryi, Mukachevo and Berehove. If you are heading to the capital, check the Kyiv — Podgorica page.

How long the bus to Montenegro takes

Kyiv to Budva takes 38 h 30 min according to the timetable: departure at 22:00, arrival on day three at 11:30. From other cities the trip is shorter:

  • Kyiv to Podgorica — 35 h 30 min;
  • Kyiv to Bar — 36 h 30 min;
  • Lviv to Budva — 30 h 40 min;
  • Mukachevo to Budva — 27 h 45 min;
  • Berehove to Budva — 26 h 50 min.

Day by day, it looks like this: the first night the bus crosses Ukraine, on the morning of day two it passes Lviv and Zakarpattia, during the day it crosses Romania and then continues through Serbia. The second night is spent on the way to Montenegro, and on the morning of day three the bus is already in Podgorica, with only a short stretch left to the coast.

Passengers from Kyiv and Zhytomyr spend two nights on the bus; from Lviv and Zakarpattia, one. The bus makes scheduled stops in towns along the way, in Ukraine mostly at filling stations. Border waiting times can't be predicted in advance, so don't book a transfer or check-in right at the scheduled arrival time — leave yourself some slack.

On board and luggage

The bus has a toilet, air conditioning, 220 V sockets, USB ports and Starlink internet, so you can work, watch films or stay in touch with family all the way.

The fare includes 1 piece of luggage up to 25 kg and hand luggage up to 5 kg. If you need more, extra luggage costs 1,200 UAH per piece up to 25 kg. Keep documents, medicines, chargers and things for the night in your hand luggage — your suitcase travels in the luggage hold.

What to pack for the journey

  • your passport and the QR ticket saved on your phone;
  • a neck pillow, a blanket or a warm layer for the night — the bus is air-conditioned;
  • water and snacks without meat or dairy products, which cannot be brought into the EU;
  • a power bank and charging cables;
  • wet wipes, hand sanitiser and toiletries;
  • any medicines you take, in their original packaging;
  • some cash: Montenegro uses the euro.

Tips for first-timers

  • Arrive at your stop early so you can load your luggage without a rush.
  • Choose the arrival stop closest to where you are staying: the fare is the same to every stop in Montenegro, and an extra transfer costs time and money.
  • Save your ticket so it opens offline, or print it.
  • Check your roaming options in advance or buy a local SIM card on arrival.
  • Travelling with children? Bring comfortable clothes for sleeping and a few things to keep them busy.

Documents for the trip

You need a biometric passport for international travel. Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport can enter Montenegro, Serbia and Romania visa-free; check the current rules on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before you travel.

There are three borders on the route: Ukraine — Romania, Romania — Serbia and Serbia — Montenegro. Keep your passport on you, not in your suitcase, and we recommend arranging travel medical insurance in advance.

Bus, plane or train?

There are currently no direct flights from Ukraine, so you have to fly from an airport in a neighbouring country — and get there first. There is no direct train to Montenegro either; the journey means several trains and changes. Such combinations can be faster, but you have to juggle several timetables, tickets and transfers with luggage.

The direct bus wins on simplicity: one ticket, one boarding point in Ukraine and you get off by the sea. No moving suitcases, no connections to watch, and you know in advance where and when you will arrive.

How to buy a Ukraine — Montenegro bus ticket

  1. Open the Ukraine — Montenegro page or the page for your city.
  2. Pick a date in the date picker.
  3. Choose your boarding and arrival stops and enter passenger details exactly as in the passport.
  4. After payment, your ticket with a QR code arrives by email.

Tickets are sold one way, so you can plan the return separately once you know your dates. Travelling as a family or group? Book all passengers in one booking — it is simpler to travel together and keep everything in order.

Support is available daily from 08:00 to 21:00 Kyiv time to help you choose a stop or sort out a booking.
